GOES-R Beginners Guide

A GOES- R Beginner’s Guide for Users is now available. The guide includes steps for using cloud services and tools to acquire, analyze, and visualize GOES-R Series data:

Map Layers Update

The Map Layer installer on the website has been updated with the latest NWS changes through June 2020. 

Weather Message 4.5 Released

Weather Message 4.5 came out of beta on 4/10/2020.  It is now available on the regular downloads page.  The full installer will now help new users register for a Weather Wire user name and password.  The Quick Start Guide was updated with this release.

Users that purchase 4.5 will now get a registration code that automatically registers Weather Wire.

I know it took forever to release 4.5.  I kept waiting on the NWS to decide the fate of EMWIN.  Thank you to all that tested the beta's over the past year(s).

Note:  I plan on keeping the EMWIN ingest engine and options in the software for 6 months to a year.  If nothing develops, that application and options will be removed.

Legacy EMWIN Service Termination effective December 2, 2019


The NWS Legacy EMWIN services will terminate effective 1700Z December 2, 2019.  The individual
services include:

-EMWIN Satellite Broadcast Service (1692.7 MHz, GOES-14/15)
-EMWIN File Transfer Protocol (FTP) archive file server
-EMWIN ByteBlaster and HostMaster public Internet dissemination services at NWS Headquarters

On August 29, 2019, the NWS follow-on enterprise EMWIN (eEMWIN) services were placed into operations

following the release of a public notification issued on August 29, 2019, via Service Change Notice:

The new eEMWIN services consist of:



-eEMWIN satellite broadcast service on the NESDIS GOES-East and GOES-West HRIT/EMWIN Broadcast

NWS will provide more than 90 days of parallel operations of the legacy EMWIN services and the
updated eEMWIN services before terminating the legacy EMWIN services on December 2, 2019. This
overlap should provide users the opportunity to acquire, install, operate and transition to the new
HRIT/EMWIN receiving system and software, with minimal impact to current operations.

Weather Wire Transition


NWS will be transitioning NWWS-OI services from primary to backup on September 9, 2019.  Based on corrections to NWS systems during the last transition, no action should be required; i.e., all accounts should automatically transition over with only a slight delay.  If your system should fail, the backup IP address is 140.90.113.240.  Check the NWWS webpage for additional information.

A return transition from backup to primary is planned for September 11, 2019.

Updated to reflect the effective date of the eEMWIN services becoming operational from July 24, 2019 to TBD; an updated SCN will be issue when a new date is set.

Effective on a date to be determined, the NWS enterprise Emergency Managers Weather Information Network (eEMWIN) service is scheduled to transition to an operational NCEP Central Operations Integrated Dissemination Program (IDP) platform.  The eEMWIN dissemination service operates through a public facing NWS web service and over the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R (GOES-R) Series satellites. The present operational GOES-R Series satellites are:

GOES-East (GOES-16) at 75.2 degrees West longitude GOES-West (GOES-17) at 137.2 degrees West longitude

HRIT-EMWIN SERVICE PHASE-IN

On July 30, 2019, the NWS eEMWIN service enters a 30-day system stability evaluation period.  On a date to be determined, after a successful evaluation period, the NWS eEMWIN HRIT-EMWIN broadcast and public facing NWS web service will be operational.

Users transitioning to the High Rate Information Transmission
(HRIT) EMWIN broadcast service will require an HRIT-EMWIN receiving station.  HRIT-EMWIN system requirements and user information are available from NESDIS. Some information on HRIT- EMWIN receiving station equipment available for purchase is provided on the NWS EMWIN Web Services:

EMWIN on HRIT/EMWIN Broadcast Undergoing 30-day Test

The NWS EMWIN service over the GOES-16 and 17 HRIT/EMWIN broadcast has entered a 30-day test period (20 JUN - 19 JUL 2019).  Content on EMWIN subchannels 20, 21, and 22; and on the associated EMWIN FTP archive file service should remain stable over the next 30 days, unless a significant issue is encountered.

Users are reminded that products received on the EMWIN sub-channels and from the EMWIN FTP archive files should not be used for operations until the EMWIN service over HRIT/EMWIN is declared operational by the NWS.

Weather Wire SSL Update

NWS will be updating the SSL Certificate for the NWWS-OI service today at 1700 UTC (1pm EDT). The NWWS-OI service will need to be restarted in order to affect this change.

GOES-17 is now GOES-West


As of 1800 UTC on February 12, 2019, GOES-17 is the official GOES-West satellite stationed at 137.2 degrees west and the 1691.0 MHz GOES-15 LRIT broadcast has now been disabled. GOES-15 Infrared and Water Vapor imagery is still available on it's normal schedule on GOES-17's HRIT broadcast.

GOES-17 and GOES-15 will operate in tandem from their respective locations of 137.2 degrees west and 128 degrees west through early July 2019. After July 2019, GOES-15 data distribution will conclude while GOES-17 data distribution will continue in the GOES-West assignment.

GOES-17 Operational Declaration


GOES-17 will become the operational GOES West satellite during the week of February 11th. At the same time the GOES-15 LRIT broadcast will be disabled, but all other GOES-15 services will still be available for a 6-month period in tandem operations with GOES-17. Details below.

NESDIS has provided the following information concerning the potential for outages of the GOES data stream, including EMWIN.

The potential for solar radio frequency interference (RFI) with a satellite downlink circuit will occur whenever the Sun passes into the beam of the ground station receiving antenna. The Wallops and Fairbanks Command and Data Acquisition Stations (CDAs) and Environmental Satellite Processing Center (ESPC) receiving antennas may experience periods of Solar RFI as predicted below. Solar RFI can cause loss of telemetry lock and command capability.

GOES-17 and GOES-15 Transition Plan


Below is information on the GOES West Transition plan. This should be updated on the GOES-R website as well. There will be two drifts occurring to separate GOES-15 and GOES-17. During GOES-15's drift period, the LRIT transponder will still broadcast during it's drift, as NESDIS expects no outages to occur. 



For GOES-17 HRIT/EMWIN, the transponder will be activated on November 15th (exact time during day TBD) and there will be a GOES West stream available. Product content will be the following:

VCID 1 - Mesoscale Imagery, band 2 only for both sectors available every 15 minutes

VCID 2 - GOES-17 Band 2 Full Disk 2km resolution available every 30 minutes

GOES 14 now broadcasting EMWIN


The EMWIN Broadcast from GOES-14 at 105 degrees West, has been activated and is currently available as an alternate to the GOES-East (GOES-13) EMWIN satellite broadcast signal.  The GOES 14 EMWIN broadcast will remain operational for six months and is scheduled to terminate on or about June 13, 2018.

This service is provided to extend the opportunity for GOES-13 users to continue using their existing EMWIN equipment and software beyond the GOES-13/16 transition in mid-December 2017; while acquiring and installing the new GOES-16 HRIT/EMWIN antennas, receivers and software. 

EMWIN data customers that transition to the GOES-14 EMWIN broadcast service are reminded that the downlink is a linear polarized signal.  Once the antenna has been properly oriented for azimuth and elevation, the receive feed may need to be adjusted for optimum reception.  This is usually accomplished by loosening the feed set-screw(s) and rotating the feed to achieve the highest signal strength on the EMWIN receiver.

HRIT/EMWIN Status


Here is an update from Seth Clevenstine, Direct Broadcast Manager.

Currently the GOES-16 HRIT/EMWIN broadcast is down due to a ground system anomaly that we're testing a fix for in hopes to have it up and running by next week. I'll post an update by the end of the week regarding the broadcast and it's status. I apologize for the delay in communication.

I would also like to take the time to point out the GOES East transition schedule.

Key Dates for GOES East Transition:
  1. November 30th, the HRIT/EMWIN broadcast will be offline while GOES-16 will transition eastward at 1.41 degrees a day
  2. December 11th, GOES-16 will stop it's drift at 75.2 degrees West.
  3. December 14th, ~1530Z GOES 13 will turn off the LRIT transponder
  4. December 14th, ~1545Z GOES 16 will turn on the HRIT transponder
  5. December 14th, ~1545Z, the HRIT ground system will start broadcasting to HRIT/EMWIN as the operational GOES East satellite.

GOES-16 Drift and Transition to Operations

GOES-16 is planned to begin drifting to the GOES-East operational location of 75.2 degrees west longitude on November 30, 2017. Drift is scheduled to complete on December 11, 2017 and nominal operations will resume by December 20, 2017. During the drift period, five instruments (ABI, GLM, SUVI, SEISS, and EXIS) will be placed in safe or diagnostic modes and will not be capturing or distributing data. MAG is the only instrument that will continue to operate with nominal data distribution during the transition. GOES Rebroadcast (GRB), Data Collection System (DCS), High Rate Information Transmission (HRIT)/ Emergency Managers Weather Information Network (EMWIN), and the Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking (SARSAT) system will be disabled during drift. This is due to X-band radio frequency downlink interference.
On December 7, 2017, GOES-13 GOES VARiable (GVAR) service will begin relay through GOES-14 and will be available through both satellites until December 14, 2017, at which time GOES-13 GVAR will only be transmitted through GOES-14. GOES-13 GVAR users will need to repoint their antennas to 105 degrees west to maintain receipt of GOES-13 data. Once GOES-16 reaches 75.2 degrees west on December 11, 2017, there will be three to nine days of calibration activity. All instruments will resume nominal operations by December 20, 2017, and GOES-16 will officially become GOES-East. There will be a period of overlap with GOES-13, which will remain at 75 degrees west, after GOES-16 becomes GOES-East. GOES-13 will remain on and provide data until January 2, 2018, at which time it will begin drifting to its storage location at 60 degrees west. During this period of overlap, GOES-13 GVAR will be relayed through GOES-14. Additional information will be communicated as needed.
All drift and transition operations will be led by the NESDIS Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO) with GOES-R Program operational support. Final scheduling of drift operations may change based on operational needs and will be a NOAA-level decision.

Change in Satellite Broadcast Network


Effective on or about January 16, 2018, the SES-1 satellite will no longer provide data to the NWS Satellite Broadcast Network (SBN). Data will become available from the Galaxy 28 satellite (G-28) by early December, before discontinuing the broadcast from SES-1. In addition, the location of the Master Ground Station (MGS) will move to Holmdel, NJ; the Backup Master Ground Station (BMGS) will remain in Fairmont, WV. These changes are a result of the transition to Signal Mountain as the new NWS SBN communications support subcontractor under Raytheon, the Prime Contractor for the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS).

The downlink antennas at all receiving site ground stations (SGS) will need to repoint to G-28 to accommodate this transition. Users should not need new equipment to continue receiving NOAAPORT data once the antenna has been adjusted.

Band: High, C-Band

The changeover from SES-1 to G-28 will occur in several phases to ensure a smooth transition that maximizes the amount of time with satellite backup coverage. The date of the initial broadcast from G-28 is still being finalized. Additional information and specific dates will be provided in the coming weeks in the form of subsequent Service Change Notices.
